What is a “Multiple Monitor Trading Computer”?

Multi-monitor, also called Multi-display, Multi-head, and Dual-Monitor, is the use of multiple physical display devices, such as monitors, televisions, and projectors, in order to increase the area available for computer programs running on a single computer system. Microsoft describes this setup as “one of the best ways to improve your productivity”. Randy Pausch recommended multiple monitors for improving personal productivity in his Time Management lecture. Contemporary versions of Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, and X Window System (used by GNU/Linux) all support multiple monitors. Dual monitor support once depended on specialized proprietary video drivers supplied with few video cards, along with a multi-display-supporting GUI system. Support for multiple monitor configurations was added as a standard feature in Microsoft Windows in Windows 98. It has been a standard feature in all versions of Apple’s Mac OS X (introduced in March 2001), and was a standard feature of the first color Macintosh II introduced in 1987. By adding up to two additional video cards, the Mac supported up to three monitors, although operating system support for multiple monitors wasn’t introduced in Windows until the mid 1990s. The all-in-one Mac SE/30 featured a small black & white screen, but could drive an external color monitor.

If you never tried multiple monitors and you have resources to get another monitor, maybe a dual monitor video card, I say GO FOR IT! “The only thing to fear is fear itself.” Or so they say.

However there is just thing that might not be as heart-warming as seeing little daughters birthday party photo, on the dual monitor wallpaper. That is the fact that for those of us who use Windows (and I’m fairly positive about Macs too) might need to use some type of dual monitor software to get the over all experience. Even if you purchased a dual monitor adapter, you will still want to try some of the quirky little features of something like “Ultramon” from Realtime Soft.

They provide a free trail version of their multiple monitor interface solution on their site. I checked it out and one thing that I really like about it is the fact that my Windows task-bar is now a multiple display task-bar. The crazy thing is that it’s so easy when everybody tries to please me. Not only did multi-monitors.com get me a great multiple monitor computer but Ultramon got me a simple easy to use application that makes my multi screen display work seamlessly like one.

I mean here we have a a program that although small is not so little. This great little software will enable you to multi-task better than ever before with your multi screen display. Every day more and more people use more than one monitor, and the great thing about this little program is that it lets you make your screens extremely personal to your needs.

Two of the best features, I think, is the Taskbar Extender, and the ability to stretch a quicktime video across dual screen monitors and not loose any picture quality. In fact it sometimes gains picture quality to make one big screen. With the Taskbar Extender, the once ordinary windows single monitor taskbar extends across multi screens and displays the application in the monitor its on. That’s better than having to always go back to the main monitor to find a application , usually among many others, in the taskbar.

One thing is for sure. This little program compliments my multiple monitor computer and helps me to be more efficient while using it. After all, with all the time spent on the computer shouldn’t we make best of the time?

The basic concepts related to the various types of multiple-adapter configurations are not new or specific to Windows Vista, but are important to understand in relation to the design of the multi-adapter feature in Windows Vista.

Get a different feel using a Multiple Monitor display on Vista than with it’s predecessor Windows XP.

Although the functionality is the same for the most part, you’ll notice something is slightly different.

For example, when using the XP operating system, it was rather easy to install different dual monitor video cards from different manufacturers on the same multiple monitor system. This was typically done by installing a high-end graphics card from one company, placing it in the primary PCI Express slot, and also having a lower-end standard PCI video card (possibly from a different manufacturer) powering peripheral displays. Even Though these two cards which can be completely different using two different “display drivers” (the software that tells Windows how to use the graphics card,) this configuration could still work in the Windows XP operating system.

Microsoft has been known however, for claims that having multiple monitor VGA drivers in Windows XP often causes stability crisis.

So in an attempt to resolve this issue, Windows Vista requires that all installed graphics cards use the same display drivers in order to perform efficiently and stable. The drawback to such events, is that all graphics cards installed on a dual monitor setup or higher should be from the same manufacturer, and not from different companies. For example, no mix matching Nvidia dual monitor video cards with ATI cards.

If for some reason you would want to continue using outdated hardware but wanted to upgrade to Vista (if that’s possible)

you can use a legacy XP driver (XPDM driver) with your existing graphics hardware. However you must be forewarned that some options in the Vista such as, but not limited to, advanced 3D rendering options to your computer monitors. You can also use a dual monitor adapter to.

One of the favorite improvements in Windows Vista using multiple monitors,

and that is the remote desktop client now has multi screen capability. Let’s say your at the home office and you need a screen shot from your PC at the other office. With Windows Vista, you have the power to remotely access your PC from another using the Remote Desktop feature. Your entire desktop can be displayed instead of just the main monitor, even if the viewer only has one monitor.

Whether you use a dual monitor video card or a dual monitor adapter, your going to benefit by upgrading your system to support a dual monitor display at the least.

Make PowerPoint Presentations easier with dual monitors by enabling the Presenter View.

Enabling the Presenter View allows you to view notes and other information to help you while you’re giving the presentation. The audience sees the slide show while you view notes and upcoming slides.

Add a couple inexpensive add-ons to PowerPoint, and get even more use out of PowerPoint and Multiple Displays. Check out programs like PowerViewer and Sunday Star to display multiple PowerPoint presentations at once. Turn powerPoint into a program for displaying your multiple monitor display wall. Mirror Mode gives the option to show the same presentation on two or more monitors. Using a technique such as Mirroring would be ideal in large rooms where it might not be easy for all viewers to see a single display.

Before you can turn on the dual monitor setup (sometimes called multiple monitor support), you must have the proper hardware installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Dual monitor support is available for desktop computers running Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or later, and laptop computers running Microsoft Windows XP.

1. If Control Panel is not already visible, click the Start menu, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click the Display icon.
2. On the Settings tab, select the monitor icon for the presenter’s monitor (usually 1), and then select the Use this device as the primary monitor check box.If this check box is selected and unavailable, the monitor is already designated as the primary monitor. Only one monitor can be selected as the primary monitor at a time. When you select a different monitor icon and complete step 2, this setting for the previous monitor is automatically cleared and becomes accessible again.
3. Select the secondary monitor icon, and then select the Extend my Windows Desktop onto this monitor check box.

Notes

• You can only show the presenter view on one monitor and run the slide show from the other monitor.
• Your computer may have the capability to support multiple monitors, but PowerPoint supports the use of two for a slide show.
• You can turn off dual monitor support by selecting the second monitor and then clearing the Extend my Windows Desktop onto this monitor check box.

Windows XP Users:

As a side note, you should be aware that in a Multi Monitor Setup one of the monitorswill serve as the primary monitor which will display the login dialog upon start up of your pc. Most all of the items you open will default to the primary monitor. One of the greatest things is that you can actually select completely different resolutions for each screen as well as adjust the color settings individually. To connect up your Multiple Monitor System you will need additional video outlets or one (or more) of the easy to use and truly a no brain-er “so easy a caveman can do it” Multi-Monitor Adapters offered by the company that brings us the productivity machine that is gaining steam as an authority and known worldwide as Super PC. It’s the type of simple yet dependable Multiple Monitor video adapter that will allow you to take full advantage of the awesome productivity gains you would expect to get when using a Multi-Screen solution without the daunting need to install expensive, over-rated, over-priced, off the chain and unnecessary multiple monitor software.

Configuration Step: Here we go!

1) Go to START -> CONTROL PANEL

2) Select APPEARANCE AND THEMES -> DISPAY

3) Select the SETTINGS TAB and click IDENTIFY which will display a large number on each of the monitors. This shows which monitor is going to correspond with each icon.

4) Click the icons and drag them to the real world position in which the monitors are set up.
Click APPLY or OK

That’s almost just about it, your screen will most likely flash and Windows may ask you if you’d like to keep the settings and if all is well and everything looks good, then go ahead and hit OK. Viola! You now have a Multi Screen / Multi Monitors to work with. Enjoy!

To change the primary monitor in Windows XP you can do the following:

Steps:

1) In SETTINGS TAB of the Display Properties Dialog box, click once on the monitor icon that you would like to make the primary monitor.

2) Click to select the USE THIS DEVICE AS PRIMARY MONITOR check box. This box will not be available if you select the monitor that is already your primary monitor.

Windows Vista Users

Note: Windows Vista is designed to be a little more user friendly. When I plug in my additional monitor, Windows automatically sets it up for me, MOST OF THE TIME. So, I’ve included these directions for the times when Windows is unable to set up your monitor on its own. Also, as mentioned above, I’ve included a short video for the Vista setup, just in case you have trouble finding anything.

Configuration Step:

1) Go to the START button (actually, it’s the circular Window logo in the bottom left hand corner of the screen on most Vista desktops.)

2) Select CONTROL PANEL from the right hand column.

3) If you are in Classic View, then select CONTROL PANEL HOME.

4) Under the Appearance and Personalization, click ADJUST SCREEN RESOLUTION

5) Now you should see two or more black boxes if you’ve already connected your additional monitor. The icons are representations of the real world position of your monitors. You can drag and drop the icons so that they accurately represent where your multiple monitors are located on your desk.

6) Now select the additional monitor by click the icon and make sure the check box below that says, “Extend the desktop onto this monitor” is selected, then click APPLY. Once complete, this process will enable your Multiple Monitor Setup to perform seamlessly and allow you to navigate through all monitors.

7) You may see the screen flash, and the desktop should now be extended to show Dual Screens. You should get a little pop up that asks if you’d like to keep these settings. If everything looks good, click OK. If something isn’t right, click CANCEL button and try one more time from the top.

There you go! Just about everything you need to know to setup your Multiple Monitor Display. Now you can finally paste that old black lab lounging peacefully on the old wood porch (like great Grandpa had in the Ozarks of MO) as a Dual Monitor Wallpaper. Or you can even go a step further than that. It all depends on the individual as to what type of Dual Monitor Backgrounds he or she may or may not use. In a world that strives to be politically correct, it’s good to know that there’s a Multi-Monitor Display on your desk to show all the different colours of diversity simultaneously!

How to Resurrect a Crashed Hard Drive

The hard drive is possibly the most failure prone part of your computer. Whether it’s been dropped, over heated, or simply died of old age. If you’ve traced your problem to the hard drive, the solution depends on the symptoms it’s exhibiting.

If the drive spins up but behaves erratically, you probably have data corruption caused by a failing drive. Try the following steps to recover your data and copy it to a good drive before the bad one dies.

Check cabling.

Before anything else, if you’re using an IDE drive, check that the data cable is connected properly, and if it is, switch to a new cable. IDE cable are notoriously cheap and are prone to having their insulation stripped by the metal edges inside the PCs case shorting out the cable.

Try a boot Disc

Try starting your machine with a boot disc such as Ultimate Boot CD for Windows to learn if the drive is readable. If it is, back up all of the data to another drive, and reformat the original discs to see if it’s salvageable.

Check for bad sectors

You may have bad sectors. Try using HDD Re-generator to locate any. Download the demo and burn it to a boot able CD. If the free demo finds bad sectors, it may be worth paying for the full version, if it can recover the bad sectors and make the drive usable once more.

Try Utilities from disk’s manufacturer

TackTech.com features manufacturer specific utilities for virtually any hard drive vendor. Find outwhat company made the drive that’s failing, then download the appropriate diagnostic application. All of the tools are free and can help diagnose problems on the drive and repair them.

Try Data Recovery Software

If you still can;t get the drive to boot, turn to data recovery software to attempt salvage lost files. You have dozens of alternatives in this market, and prices may generally run from $40 to $200. Stellar Phoenix may be an ideal choice.

Some Last Ditch Efforts

If the Hard Drive won’t spin up at all, you can still try a few last at jabs that have only a slim chance of working. But if your drive won’t even spin, it probably wont hurt to try these, just don’t do anything to further damage the disc, as the drive recovery surface may still be able to help. For example don’t bang on the drive, and don’t remove the cover and expose the heads.

Try the Freezer Trick

The freezer trick is an old standby if you have a drive that’s clicking but not spinning. Put the drive in a plastic freezer bag to keep the water out, and wrap it in a towel for extra protection, and then freeze it for a few hours. Let it thaw back to room temperature after you remove and get rid of any condensation you can see. There’s no agreed upon length of time to freeze it so start with an hour and work your way up to 24 hours and see if you can make that drive spin up one last time.

Try to Loosen Stuck Drives

To loosen stuck discs, hold the drive in your hand and rotate your arm outward quickly, parallel to the orientation to the plats, a bit like throwing a Frisbee. Repeat this action several times but make sure to not to bang the disc on anything. This action is designed to solve a problem called stiction or static friction, which can prevent drive platters from spinning.

Apply a High-Wattage Power Burst

Finally you can try attaching the drive to a high wattage power supply. Even though it wont draw up extra power, a burst of juice from the highest wattage power supply you can find, could jar it into spinning up one last time.

Copy All Your Files

Remember if you do get a dead drive spinning again, don’t let it stop until you’ve copied off all your critical data. Chances are, you wont have it working again.

If all else fails and you absolutely need data off the hard drive, your last best hope is to send it to a data recovery service like Drivesavers. It isn’t cheap and expect to pay up to $3000, but they can perform magic when consumer grade tools fail.

Make Regular BackupsTo alleviate this problem in the future, make sure your back ups are up to date, and for added security, mirror a second hard drive to ensure you have a real-time back up for the minimal risks of data loss and downtime. PC World Aug. 09

Data thieves don’t have to be programming wizards to get their hands on your personal information. They often find hard drives that contain financial and other sensitive data at flea markets, charity shops, city dumbs, and even on eBay. Trading computers can contain a lot of financial information that should be protected.

So if your upgrading your single computer monitor PC to a Multi Display Computer be sure to protect yourself with some of these tips from PC World.

These tips will help you render an old drives files unreadable.

Reformatting a drive and deleting its partition doesn’t truly erase it’s files. Putting files into windows recycle bin makes them unreadable by the operating system, but they’re still viewable to anyone using data recovery. That’s why a dedicated drive erasing tool is a must.

A reliable way to destroy old data is to use a block eraser utility such as DBAN, which overrides each block on your hard drive several times, and can create either a boot-able floppy disc or an ISO file you can burn to a CD. Once you boot from a start up disc just a few key strokes can begin blowing away your data.

The secure erase utility uses the disc drive secure erase command that’s built into every modern hard drives firmware. The wipe is incredibly fast. Secure erase can do the whole job in about half the time that a block eraser could take. Especially if you already have a multi display.

Some government agencies use huge grinders to shred their discarded drives into tiny bits. Some folks chop their old drives with an ax or drive nails through them. You may not have to go through such extremes though, however a few whacks with a sledge hammer can do wonders for your peace of mind and may even reduce a little stress. Make sure you know how to use such tools safely and remember to use safety goggles.

Encrypting files on your hard drive prevents unauthorized access to your information. You can also use encryption to help ensure that the files you delete are not recoverable. If you encrypt a file before you delete it, a file recovery utility may be able to restore the encrypted version of the file, but the utility will not be able to decrypt it, and chances are good that no one else will be able to decrypt either.

To use Windows XP Pros built in encryption, you have to log on to a password protected account.
