Several months ago, I found myself in a somewhat interesting predicament.  I upgraded from a desktop that I had been using for quite some time, to one of those a supped up laptop that I could take when I travel.  The reason why I chose to do this was because I got tired of having both a cheap laptop and a desktop and having to split files among the two whenever I travelled.  The easiest solution was to buy a better laptop to use for my main computer.

However, it wasn’t long after I setup my laptop that I realized how much I missed having three monitors.  Sure, you can setup an extra monitor with your laptop, but when you are use to having three monitors, two just won’t cut it.  Now I have to say, because of my job in the financial industry I happen to know quite a few people with similar setups to mine and one of those friends suggested that I try the Matrox Dualhead2Go.  This is an adapter that allows you to hook up an additional 2 monitors to your laptop.  As it turns out this was precisely the solution I was looking for when I started searching for a solution.

So how did I set it up?  I’m going to go through the details and hopefully save you some trouble shooting steps.  Currently I’m using a Sony Vaio with a 17 inch screen.  I have two Acer monitors which have a screen resolution of 1440×900.  The VGA out on my Sony Vaio connects to the Matrox Dual Head2Go, and then I connect each of the monitors to the DualHead2Go.  The next step is fairly common sense.  You must go into your windows display settings and identify your additional monitors.  You can also arrange them in the display settings box, so that they appear in the same arrangement that they do in real life.  This makes passing the mouse back and forth between you multiple monitors much easier.

Matrox Powerdesk SE is a program that comes with your DualHead2Go adapter that helps determine the resolution of your monitors.  Because I was using all the same types of monitors this was not necessary for me.  But not everyone uses the same type of monitors, so it might be necessary for you.  For example, if you used one monitor that was 1440×900 and one that was 2800×900, you want to make sure you have you settings optimized so that that resolution is the highest quality on both of the monitors which you have chosen to use.

A lot of people are concerned about a lag in performance, but I have to tell you, it simply works great for me.  I’ve had no major issues thus far and I don’t foresee any in the near future either.  Sometimes it works so well that I don’t even remember it is there.  And I have to say, my VAIO’s GeForce  8400M GS graphics card seems to  be holding up pretty damn well.  I haven’t noticed any lagging at all.  This is great, because I would hate to have to spend more money on this system than I have to.  The only problem I have had at all is if I disconnect my laptop to go into another room and then try to reconnect.  Not always, but sometimes this results in having to re-hook up the cables to the Matrox DualHead2Go a few times before both monitors finally wake up.  I consider this a rather small price to pay for all the convenience of having three monitors.

If you can afford to do so, I highly recommend picking one of these bad boys up, as I’m quite certain that you will not be disappointed at all.  It has been a true blessing for me and I’m honestly not really sure how I would actually get along without it.  It saved the day when I thought that I was going to have to suffer without an extra monitor, which I have become extremely accustomed to having.

The problem, however, is that the Direct X 10 isn’t living up to its hype.  In fact, you’re unable to run Direct X at a frame rate above 1280×1024.  GeForce 8600 GT even had trouble delivering graphic intense DirectX 9.

However, let’s move on to the positive points with the nVidia GeForce 8600GT.  The texture fill rate was increased by 28.6 percent, while memory bandwidth remained the same at 22.4 GB/s.  The result is between 17-30 percent improvements over its predecessor.   And if you don’t mind running direct 9 applications and games and running them at lower resolutions like 1024×768, then this might be the absolute perfect card for you.

Overall, the nVidia GeForce 8600GT is a middle of the road quality card.  It didn’t have the performance improvements over its predecessor that we’d hoped for, but for less graphic intense applications, it still gets the job done and deserves a look when you are in the market for a new graphics card.

Enter the Radeon HD 4670.  When released, it was in the less than $100 category, which is not something Radeon had done before.  In fact, up until its release Nvidia had dominated that market with both their 9500 GT and their 8600 series of cards.  But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for everyone.

Now, as I mentioned before, this card is not the best card you can buy.  It is not even close.  It is, however, a good general card for those of that want to be able to game (albeit at lower resolutions) and perform general work functions, and offering good HD decoding.  In other words, you won’t be disappointed as long as you weren’t expecting something like the NVidia Quadro NVS 450.

So what exactly is the take-away from this?  If you’re looking for a graphics card that is high enough quality to run dual monitors for your trading work station, but isn’t going to break the bank while doing so, then the Radeon HD 4670 is probably a solid choice for you.  It won’t blow minds or work process in the same way as some of Radeon’s high quality cards, but it will leave you feeling satisfied if you are looking for what some are calling the “jack of all trades” graphics card.  Radeon is known for quality, so they may be taking a gamble by releasing what some of us consider subpar, but in reality they are just targeting a new market. This is a market that seeks a reasonably priced graphics card that will perform the basic functions that we require.  While it might not make sense to some, for those that don’t consider themselves video phials, but do want to have high quality reliable hardware that can be easily replaced and overall won’t break the bank.

Reviewer “Blu” said, that while it may not be the cheapest on the market, the value is there because is works great.  In fact, the install was a breeze because all of the adapters are plug and play.  While reviewer “Backman” said, he originally bought this card to set up independent multimedia shows in different rooms and it was super easy to setup and only took a little bit of configuring to get it to work correctly.

The biggest con to the NVidia Quadro NVS 450 Workstation video card is the price, but that should deter those looking for a high quality solution for their multiple monitor workstation.  This card is the answer to the lower quality (and lower cost) GeForce9800 GT, as it out performs the GeForce9800 in almost every way.

So, if you’re deciding trying to decide on a graphics card solution for you business quad monitor setup, I highly recommend you consider the NVidia Qudro NVS 450, and as long as you don’t mind shelling out the cash, you will not be disappointed.

Configuration is one of the key aspects to consider when setting up your multiple monitor computers, especially if you are a day trader.  Using the right amount of RAM, the right processor, the right video card(s) are all going to be imperative.  But don’t forget the monitors you’re going to use either.  I highly recommend making sure you get something at least 22 inches or more and that have a screen resolution of at least 1080p (which is the highest available at the time of writing this article. )  There are a few different types of monitors available, but my personal favorite is the LED monitor because of its high resolution, low energy usage and light weight.

If you have employees, than it may be time to start considering a multiple monitor computer system for them as well.  You could be costing your company thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars every year, by simply not allowing your employees to reach their maximum potential with a multiple monitor computer system.  Just think of it this way, if every employee wastes 6 minutes a day (the national average) switching back and forth between applications and you have 10 employees- you are losing 60 minutes a day, and a full WEEK of work for absolutely no reason what so ever.  Yes! 40 hours a week WASTED.

So the real question is, are you ready to buy a multiple monitor capable computer?  Follow my advice I will help you pick the absolute best computer for your situation.  This includes helping you decide how many monitors you’re going to need, how many video cards to buy, the amount of ram and the processor you’re going to need.

The first question you should ask yourself is, what are you going to be using this for and how many applications will you be running.  I recommend absolutely no more than 2 applications per 1 monitor (although ideal is 1 application per monitor.)

Other minimums that you should consider:  at least 1 terabyte of storage and 8 gigabytes of RAM.  Combine these components with Windows 7 and you’ll be all set.  Your new system will be able to run practically any application with ease and without any lag.  You’ll also be prepared to upgrade at any time.

This is an ideal time to buy too.    We’ve hit a short term plateau that will result in lower prices for the time being and allow you to get the system of your dream for less than you expected to spend.  Don’t be afraid to jump in and get what you’ve always wanted.  The time is now.

So what about performance you ask?  While it’s not an Nvidia Gforce video card, the Triple Head 2Go is the highest quality multi-monitor adapter you can buy.  On top of the its ability to hook up 3 monitors, it’s refresh remains stable and is will give you the performance you’re looking for.

What are some the main reasons you would use a multi-monitor adapter instead of installing additional video cards?   Well the number 1 reason is time.  Time is definitely a big factor.    There is very little effort involved in installing one of these cards.  In fact, nearly anyone could do it.  They come with simple instructions and don’t require any special skills.  All total, it only takes 10-15 minutes, whereas if you’re trying to install videos cards to increase you monitor space, you’re probably looking at significantly more time as well as the requirement of knowing how to this.  And you really have to be careful, just a little static shock could fry your whole computer.   But with the multi-monitor adapter, it’s pretty cut and dry install process and no there is absolutely zero risk of ruining your computer.

So what makes them different?  The answer is quality, precision and price.  While other companies are looking for ways to cut costs (using cheaper and inferior product) Super PC continues to use the best possible parts.  The result is 2 fold:  faster and more reliable.  They also keep margins low, so cost to the customer is low as well.   And that’s not to mention their extremely high quality customer service.  Both the initial sales process and customer support are excellent.  You won’t find a pushy salesman at Super PC.  Just professional customer support focused on helping you build the machine you’re looking for. Efficiency:  being able to multi task is absolutely key to being productive.  But your computer system should allow you to do more than just multitask.  You should be able to run a variety of programs at normal speeds without any problems.

Space:  using a multiple monitor stand, you can build a computer that runs six monitors, yet doesn’t hog all of your work space.  There are a variety of arrangements that make this possible and you should limit yourself to a strictly horizontal computer system.   Don’t be afraid to experiment.

Balance:  You should be able to more efficiently balance your workload when using a computer that runs 6 monitors.   Each monitor can have a specific purpose, making it easier for you do things efficiently.

So what’s required to build a computer that runs six monitors?  It’s actually probably easier than you think.  Using three video cards with 2 DVI outputs each is the start.  The only thing you’re really going to want to watch out for is making sure that both your processor and RAM are also up to par.  I personally would use anything less than an Intel i7 and a 8 GBs of RAM.  Don’t be cheap with this part.

I also suggest sticking with Dell or Samsung monitors, as I’ve had great experience with these in the past.  Use something 1080p- no less.  Good luck with your endeavor, you’re going to love your 6 monitor computer system.

Key components of a trading desktop computer include the amount and quality of RAM, CPU (processor), video card or cards depending on how many monitors you want to use and the actual monitors themselves.

The Intel i7 is by far my favorite processor as of right now.  It boosts quite a bit of speed, and while AMD makes good products, I still feel Intel has the edge.  When it comes to RAM don’t be cheap.  A full 8 gigabytes are recommended.  There are lots of good brands, I prefer Corsair because of price and reliability.

LCD monitors are still the most economical and in fact have gone down in price.  You can find 22’ Dell or Samsung monitors for under $200 now.  Even better prices are available if you don’t mind some refurbished products.

Don’t forget dedicated video cards.  One of my favorites is the NVidia GeForce 9600GT 512MB GDDR3 PCI-Ex16 2.0 which boost plenty of speed, but has a very reasonable cost.
